Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
