Extreme heat and raging wildfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels expected to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across much of the south-west.

Widespread Extreme Heat Warnings Throughout Multiple States

These conditions follow this month's fires in another state, which resulted in the loss of homes and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for later this week in parts of South Australia and NSW, as a ridge of high pressure moves eastward, bringing intense sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of extremely dry vegetation and relentless high temperatures creates a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Global Weather Extremes Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a metropolis was left in blackout last week after powerful winds damaged the urban power grid, with falling trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also caused significant transport delays at a key airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Substantial damage to electrical infrastructure is expected to cause further issues as utility companies scramble to restore power to over 1 million residents.

Atypical Mist Blankets Sunny Area

At the same time, a region famed for its sunny weather and plentiful sunshine has endured one of its dullest and foggiest weeks on record. A specific type of low cloud, which typically lingers for only a short time, has been remarkably extensive and persistent this year, holding temperatures at a key transport hub below 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The prolonged fog has been fuelled by exceptional fall rainfall that left soils waterlogged.

Storm Delivers Wintry Weather to Holiday Islands

Turning to Spain, a weather system has brought intense rainfall, strong winds and even snowfall to a group of islands – weather many would not connect with this favored tourist spot. While snow is not unheard of at higher ground, the storm delivered some of the heaviest snow depths since 2016 to a protected area, forcing its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snowfall, fierce winds from the north buffeted the island chain, with wind gusts reaching 50mph observed on multiple islands. The influence of the weather event is forecast to diminish this week with more typical weather taking hold.
