Israelis mark second anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
People have gathered throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast on Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the plan.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the talks said that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.
The official stated the day's discussions ended without significant progress, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the discussions are "tough and have still not produce any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to reduce the differences between the two sides.
Critical Points in Discussions
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Post-war administration of the region
Citizen Reaction
In the city's memorial area that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member endured the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person return no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see all home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence heal," she added.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people assembled to show their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel reports 48 remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Protester Atalia Regev stated: "We must do every compromise necessary for the hostages to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."
Research now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to end in exchange for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From the site, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the early hours of that day in the western district, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"As the evening comes, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had accepted the corpses of several people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the south region of the city indicated another two victims had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the south, medics stated.
