Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
New York police issued surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
