The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
