Prison Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison

He battled justice and the legal system won.

Sixty days after receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “annihilate” Brazil’s political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally looks destined for incarceration.

Expected Imprisonment

The found-guilty coup-monger – who has been subject to house arrest in his residence while a series of court processes and challenges proceed – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the next few days, amid increasing talk that he will be transferred to a notorious high-security prison.

Past Comments on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the conservative ex- military man exhibited little sympathy for the country's prison population.

“For what reason must we provide these dirtbags a good life?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be screwed, period. That’s what I reckon.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to end up there, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Jail Facility Speculation

However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, a group of four this week inspected the complex in an apparent effort to discourage the supreme court from sending him there.

Izalci Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he expected the septuagenarian figure to be jailed in the coming fortnight and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe digestive issues – the outcome of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – implied it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He will not be able to cope if they send him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the standard of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells containing four dozen detainees: “It's almost one square meter per inmate.

“We talked to the convicts and they complain, naturally, of the horrible meals,” added the senator.

Allies Speak Out

The senator isn't the sole person speaking out before the ex-leader's expected detention.

Writing in a major publication, another ally, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and asserted Brazil was about to see “the greatest political injustice in its past”.

“It is an wrong that gnaws the spirits of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided Popular Opinion

It is possibly correct given the significant backing Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. Yet his predicted incarceration has also pleased the hearts of many others who think he deserves to be incarcerated for plotting to block his successor from taking power – and also plotting to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent administration's political party, stated: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in isolation. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to get dignified treatment – but dignified care while incarcerated. He can’t continue being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have long praising the tough treatment of convicts, had unexpectedly realized to their privileges. “Just now has the far-right – which has repeatedly claimed that human rights are not for lawbreakers – decided to visit a jail to discover what situations are really like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, demeaning handling”.

Potential Jail Conditions

Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently contains about fourteen thousand prisoners, his more likely assigned facility seems to be a adjacent jail for law enforcement and other “unique” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are much more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro had while occupying the impressive official residence, approximately a short distance away.

According to information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – about the size of a couple of car spots – and contains a 130 square foot WC with a shower and a 12 sq metre terrace. “He could be permitted to have a TV and also a minibar in his room as long as they were supplied by his family,” the report indicated.

Political Reactions

Senator Lucas condemned the talked-about plan to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who presided over Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his outcome in the {
