The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as among these.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
